The tourist season runs from May to October, although there are always local shops and restaurants open for trade, and accommodation is still available in villas and private dwellings during the off season.
I stayed at the Windmill Hotel, where you will find a warm welcome from English-born Pat and her husband, Mikail Kiliç. There is an unusual moat-like swimming pool stretching from reception to the ‘windmill’ itself, a three-storey tower with lovely views over the complex.

In and around Yalikavak, fans of glass and water features will be entranced by an Ali Baba’s cave of colour, light, and fantasy in the workshop of Enver Camdal, on the main road to Gϋndogan.

Talking of Ali Baba, there is an excellent fish restaurant of the same name in Yalikavak. The seafood mezes are one of the stars of the show; kalamar dolma and homemade fishcakes might be the preliminaries to hot grilled octopus or butterflied prawns. Telephone: 385 3194
Also worth visiting is the Windmill Steakhouse. The vegetarian stew is particularly good, and their pies and steaks have a great reputation. You can sit out by the boats on the harbour when the nights are warm.
