Guide to Kauai - Part 1

cliffs and crystal clear blue waters of kauai guide to kauaiKauai, the Healing Isle. by Ginny Lloyd

Aloha! Believed to be the oldest island in the Hawaiian chain, Kauai is known to some as the Garden Isle while to others it’s the Healing Isle. Either way, this tropical retreat is the perfect place to visit when you’re looking for a peaceful EXhale and renewal. Unlike a couple of the other Hawaiian Islands, where you’ll find city-like activities with lots of tourists, the quiet slower pace of Kauai can be refreshing. You’ll definitely unwind, and as you do you’ll become entranced by the irresistible enchantment of her charms.

Before you book your trip, first decide which type of EXile experience you want, and choose your home base. The southern side has the largest proliferation of beachfront hotels and timeshares to choose from--where most visitors stay. You’ll find the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, (http://www.kauai.hyatt.com 808-742 1234) and the Sheraton Kauai Resort (http://www.sheraton-kauai.com/ 866-716-8109) amongst the luxury facilities. Or try the Waimea Plantation Cottages for a more personal old Hawaiian experience. (800-9-WAIMEA, http://www.waimea-plantation.com) The north shore is more remote, with the wonderful Princeville Hotel (http://www.princevillehotelhawaii.com/ 808-826-9644) situated on a high bluff overlooking the ocean. The eastern coast is home to the older towns of Lihue, where the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/LIHHI 808-245-5050) sits nestled in a natural harbor, and Kapaa, where several timeshares and resorts hug the coast. The western shore is wild and uninhabited, except for the adventurous hikers camping at designated sites. Healers are attracted to the island, resulting in numerous spa and massage services at most places you stay, and through small businesses found everywhere. Be sure to EXile for a day at the Hyatt’s serene ANARA Spa. Try the Honey Ginger Body Masque. (808 240-6440, http://www.anaraspa.com/)

Beaches (http://www.hawaiiweb.com/kauai/beaches/default.htm) surround the island, guaranteeing unique surf experiences. You’ll have plenty of options to EXorcise in the warm ocean waves, or you can walk the long sandy stretches. If you dive or snorkel, there are great places for these activities marked on the numerous free maps. Tunnels Beach on the north shore is a favorite, as are spots around Poipu to the south. Dolphins and whales can be seen off of the coast at different times of the year. Take advantage of the numerous opportunities for kayaking (Outfitters Kauai, www.outfitterskauai.com/ 808-742-9667) and catamaran trips (Capt. Andy’s Kauai, http://www.napali.com/kauaisailing/ 808-335-6833) that are well worth the early morning departures. If you’re a hiker, great trails to waterfalls and canyons are along the Napali Coast and in Kokee State Park.

For the painter, photographer, or writer in you seeking creative inspiration, Kauai will not disappoint. Your rental car will soon become a mini-studio as you round one breathtaking curve after another.
