Kauai is one of those places you must EXplore. Drive along Highways 50 and 56, the main roads that take you three-quarters around the island. Divide your excursions into daily increments because you’ll find an adventurer’s paradise. Head to the breathtaking Waimea Canyon known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific located on the west side. At the end of the canyon road pointing north, you reach a wondrous view of the Kalalau Valley. On another day go to Spouting Horn on the southern rim, near the Botanical Gardens, where you can purchase jewelry at some of the island’s best bargain prices from open-air vendors. You can stop to shop at the quaint village of Koloa on the way. In the east, if you like waterfalls, don’t miss the turn-off to Wailua Falls, and look for Opaeka’a Falls in the area as well. Signs for the Ninini Point Lighthouse will be on the northeastern rim as you drive towards Haena. If you want to experience an adventure of the spiritual type, a Zen Buddhist temple sits along Highway 50 in Hanapepe. In Kapaa, on Highway 56, ask at the bakery or coffee shop for directions to the numerous temples and retreats in the area. Spirits of the ancient Hawaiians are everywhere, and you’ll find significant historical sites marked all over the island.
Lastly, to really EXplore the island in her full majesty, take one of the unforgettable helicopter tours from Will Squyres. (888-245- 4354) You’ll be glad you did!
