I had the privilege of spending a year at Oxford University on a research grant, and while I fed my mind during my studies, as a recent “ex,” I needed to feed my body and soul as well. Oxford is a lovely lively place, with students providing energy, and the glorious “dreaming spires” uplifting the spirits.
1. Exile: Feeding the Body:
The News Café: This unique little sanctuary of friendliness, healthy tasty food, and delicious coffee away from bustling Cornmarket Street is a great place to reconnect with the outside world when one is feeling exiled. The News Café, as its name implies, has free worldwide newspapers, magazines, and a bulletin board advertising Oxford Events, so you can browse while having your bagel. Single diners are always seated at good tables and made to feel welcome.

If you want to people-watch and are not as concerned with healthy eating, try the Queen’s Lane Coffee House on the intersection of Queen Street and the High. It is the oldest coffeehouse in Oxford (1654), offers an excellent cooked breakfast as well as some nice Greek specialties for lunch, and the window seats are great for prime people-watching. The examination schools are across the street, so during test season, you’ll see a steady stream of exhausted-looking students trudging to Queen’s Lane for a coffee. Good selection of free newspapers too.
