The New: Blackwell’s. Blackwell’s in Oxford is one of the oldest bookstores in the UK, and it is certainly one of the largest. Long before Borders or Barnes and Noble, Blackwell featured five stories of literary offering to delight any bibliophile’s explorations. The Norrington Room downstairs gained a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the largest display of books available for sale anywhere. The coffee shop upstairs is a lovely place to take a break, complete with a view of the dreaming spires. They also offer tours of Oxford, including an “Inklings” tour for J.R.R. Tolkien fans.

5. Exhale: The Turf Tavern. After all that exploration, a well-deservedpint and a chance to exhale is in order. Of all the pubs in Oxford, the Turf is my favorite. Close to Blackwell’s and down a hidden lane near Magdalene College’s Bridge of Sighs, it dates from the fourteenth-century. The Turf has an excellent variety of real ales on offer, and in the winter, you can roast chestnuts and/or marshmallows on the braziers in the courtyard. Bill Clinton drank here and didn’t exhale; you are allowed. Can be full of with students in the evenings,but lively, relaxed and fun; during the afternoons, one can spot a variety of Oxford dons enjoying a respite.
Dr. Anna Marie Roos is a research associate in the history of medicine unit at Oxford University, author of numerous academic articles and a monograph in the history of astronomy, and a published travel writer. Her Northern England Day-Trips is forthcoming from Hastings House Press. She is an American ex-pat now living in the UK with her British other half.
