Whether or not you’re a member, and regardless of your religious beliefs, you can get involved in the many different activities offered at the church, including groups for women, writers, quilters, and adventurers, as well as volunteer opportunities.

Once you start feeling the urge to EXplore, peruse the class offerings at the Visual Arts Center (www.handworkshop.org, 1812 W. Main St., 804-353-0094). Formerly known as the Hand Workshop, this center was founded in 1963 and continues to offer opportunities for people of all ages to explore the visual arts. They offer over 400 classes every year in areas like painting, pottery, stained glass, weaving, woodworking, and photography.

Art classes are also available at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) Studio School (www.vmfa.state.va.us/LearnMoreAdults.html; 200 N. Boulevard, 804-367-0816). Try your hand at drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, pottery, or fiber art. The VMFA also holds regular musical concerts, literary readings, lectures, symposia, film festivals, and tours.

If words are more your forte, you may want to join the Richmond Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club (www.virginiawritersclub.org/rich.html). In addition to monthly meetings, the group has small critique groups who convene regularly to share their work and get feedback. The park district’s Pine Camp Arts & Community Center (4901 Old Brook Road, 804-646-3679) (http://www.ci.richmond.va.us/departments/parks/james.aspx) also holds regular classes in dance, theater, arts and crafts, and self-improvement.

Finally, when you’re done waiting to EXhale, you may want to get involved in The Richmond Social Club (www.richmondsocialclub.com). The 3-year-old, free social events club is open to singles and couples alike and can be a great way to meet new friends who like the same kinds of things you do. Activities include arts, nightlife, sports, travel—you name it. You and your new friends can head out for a cocktail and a bite to eat at Bacchus (2 N. Meadow St., 804-355-9919). This cozy, Manhattan-style corner bistro is elegant and hip, with a lively bar and friendly service.
